Star Party, April 21st - and you're invited!

International Astronomy Day is coming! Many events are planned across North America. And most are open to the the public and families.

In the US, Astronomy Magazine is having a contest with giveaways. Plus, they have a list of events across the USA. The University of Arizona invites you to "Share the Stars" as they host an Astronomy Day for the public.

Here in Canada the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada has a list of Canadian events.

For those in Ottawa, click here for plans. If you are in Kingston, click here. Information on International Astronomy Day for residents of Victoria is here.

And don't forget this: the Ottawa Valley Astronomy & Observers Group is also inviting everyone to come out to their free outdoor event. It's all day on Sat. April 21st, in the parking lot next to Chapter's in the East end at 2401 City Park Drive, near Ogilvy Road. That's from 10 am to 10 pm Saturday April 21st. You'll be able to check out different sizes and kinds of telescope. Plus view the sun safely with their special filtered telescopes. Also see the moon - even in broad daylight. Plus video imaging of star clusters and galaxies.
Astrophotography, a slide show, info displays and free handouts.

They will be having a giant public viewing session from sunset to 10 pm - weather permitting, you'll be able to see the rings of Saturn, craters on the moon and lots more. Bring the whole family. If the weather runs foul they will have an indoor display inside Chapter's.

Contaminated Chinese (Wheat Gluten) Blues

This article will 'dish' a bit on the 'joys' of globalization and on differing safety standards for food and feed products, and environmental standards. And by dish, I mean melamine. Eh? I hear you say. Keep reading!

Earlier this year I reported that the tainting of pet food with contaminated Chinese wheat gluten might be only the tip of a larger iceberg (albeit an iceberg made of contaminated Chinese gluten). That's because wheat gluten is used in a lot of things people and their pets eat. Now various news outlets have reported that the pet food recall has been expanded to include Hill's Prescription Diet DRY m/d pet food, which is manufactured by Menu Foods, as well a brand of dog biscuits as by an Alabama company.

The culprit this time? Contaminated Chinese gluten, once again.

This time the 'magic ingredient' is not aminopterin. This time it's melamine. Yes, that would be... plastic. Melamine is used in North America and in Europe to make plastic dishes and plates. And what do the Chinese use it in? Fertilizer. How terribly scientific of them! Just what plants need, a good dose of plastic. Right, suuuuuuuuure it is.

China Environmental Blog reports from an article in the Washington Post that
"Chinese environmental officers say they are proud of their progress and that Beijing should be judged not by international standards but by how much it has improved."

"People who come here for the first time feel that the environment and the air is not good," said Yu Xiaoxuan, deputy director for construction and environment for the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games. "But they do not know how bad the pollution was several years ago." Longtime Beijing residents say the change is striking. Bo Guoping, 60, a retired factory worker who on a recent weekend was flying a kite in one of the city's new parks with her grandson, remarked: "These days, we can see the sky. Before, it was all gray."" from China Environmental News Blog.

But before we leap to any conclusions, let's consider the situation in some villages in China near the Siberian border. Here is an excerpt from an excellent piece by the CS Monitor on how Chinese villagers are being poisoned by industry and are battling to clean up their environment so they survive and don't die early or have children suffering form severe fluoride poisoning because of disreputable industrial practices and terrible government environmental standards.

Here's part of it. I hope you have a strong stomach.

"...small towns like Leifeng and Puxing, which are just a few hundred miles away from those cities, have languished. Good intentions from the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) can't solve every problem, and local officials often have little incentive to do the right thing.

The job of fighting for victims of environmental disasters is thus being taken up by growing ranks of activists and lawyers. SEPA did not respond to phone calls or written questions about the pollution in Leifeng and Puxing. "The problem is that despite all the positive rhetoric emanating from Beijing, very little has found its way down to the local level," says Elizabeth Economy, senior Asia researcher with the Council on Foreign Relations and author of "The River Runs Black," on China's environmental crisis.

"The grass-roots ... movement is where the energy is coming from in China," she adds. The plight of Leifeng and Puxing, long ignored by government and media, has become a perfect example of this larger movement. Under the direction of a legal center in Beijing as well as a local law clerk, Leifeng and Puxing villages are fighting for their day in court.

Villagers' concerns began in 2001, when hundreds of pigs and chickens mysteriously died. After Chinese New Year 2002, scores of people were stricken with illnesses ranging from debilitating headaches and severe stomach problems to heart palpitations. After wearing freshly washed clothes, many developed strange rashes. Those who worked at the factory started to talk about what went on inside and fingered the likely culprit: toxic waste.

"At first we didn't believe it," recalls Cao Qingren, a local law clerk who is fighting for the villages. "Then we realized the water must be bad.""

Just peachy.

Well then... Has it changed your mind, gentle reader? Thought not. Talk about use at your own risk! This reporter will be going out of her way to avoid purchasing ANYTHING with gluten in it and anything from China that can be ingested, given their laws on aminopterin and melamine use. Who knows what will be found next in Chinese food products. Plutonium? Arsenic? Well I certainly hope not but who knows? There doesn't seem to be a lot of oversight at this point.

Besides, think of all the energy that will be saved and greenhouse gases avoided not burning fuel to lug contaminated trade goods across the Pacific from China to North America.

Tea vs. Cortisol, Tarantula Travel + Nano WC's

This week's show features remastered rebroadcasts of 3 of the last year's reports:

You can click the link at the side to listen live! ----------}

Some species of spider have been found to have silk spinning organs not just in the regular place - on their bellies, but also on their feet. Researchers say this may change what is known about spider evolution. Plus, a British study into the relaxing effects of black tea and how it reduces and ameliorates levels and effects of the stress hormone cortisol. And a bathroom that cleans itself is now possible thanks to Aussie experimenets with nano-particulate coatings for surfaces, that are self-cleaning and that kill e.coli. Good news for hospitals and other places.

Homeland Security Wants Net's Uber Security Key

Slashdot and Germany's Heiss Online are reporting some interesting news concerning the Internet and the US Department of Homeland Security.

The annual meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, just wrapped up in Lisbon, Portugal. Heiss reports that at the meeting, Canadian Internet Registration Authority president Bernard Turcotte raised the concerns of himself and fellow managers about attempts by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to obtain the master key for the DNS root zone.

The electronic key is in effect the ultimate master key for the Internet. It's a security 'key' that signs zone keys, which are held by VeriSign, Inc. Whoever has it can track DNS Security Extensions (DNSSec) all the way back to the servers that represent the name system's root zone on the Internet. If addresses have been 'spoofed' - in other words faked - this allows them to find out who actually posted what and where they are. Internet authorities have been trying to decide who will be entrusted with keeping this very special security key safe.

According to Heisse, Turcotte told them the national registries had informed their governmental representatives about Homeland Security's intentions to obtain control of the uberkey. A European Commission rep said they are discussing the development with EU member states.

Greenhouse Gases Part of Urbanization

This Yahoo News article about a recent climatology study by NASA has raised a fuss on Digg. But here is the original NASA news release, posted to BBSnews. The scientists do not say there is no global warming, as the guy who originally dugg' the story posits. Nor do they say that greenhouse gases do not contribute to it. They are talking about the piece of puzzle of global climate change specific to California. They are saying for CALIFORNIA that both greenhouse gases and urbanization are contributing.

But I have to wonder what measures they used because - as anyone whose ever studied planetary heat and water cycles knows - increased urbanization increases paving which increases vehicle use and exhaust, which increases greenhouse gases -> the two are hopelessly intertwined! I guess I'll have to get a copy of the study and give it a read.

US Senate Bill: Climate Change = Security Threat

Michael A. Rozengurt, an oceanographer with hundreds of publications under his belt on estuarine impacts of hydroelectric projects, has written letters to various people, including former US President Bill Clinton, and also a paper over 15 years ago in a security journal on how some water impoundment projects amount to a security threat via water supplies being placed in jeopardy, making conflicts more likely.

On my private blog, (this will make sense in a second) I'm subscribed to something called "secrecy news" published on the web by the Federation of American Scientists. So today I was intrigued and rather relieved to see that FAS is reporting that the US Senate has tabled a bipartisan bill that climate change represents a security threat.

Score one for the scientists. More politicians seem to be coming out of their semi-stupor.

Curran, Material of the Future?

Two UK scientists specializing in biocomposite materials have invented a hi-tech material made partly of carrots. They call it Curran ('curran' means carrot, in Scots Gaelic) & they say it is versatile and could be used to make everything from car parts, to fishing rods to warships to engineering components.

David Hepworth and Eric Whale met while attending the University of Reading, where they both got their doctorates. They formed their company, CelluComp, in 2004.

They say that Curran could be a bio-friendly alternative to glass and carbon fibre. Currantly :) there is a global shortage of carbon fibre.

The novel material is made by extracting nano-fibres from carrots which are them mixed with hi-tech resins. This gives a substance which can be moulded into various shapes & sizes, from the stiff to loose, and with variable lightness.

The first product from CelluComp made of carrot-plus-resin material is the Just Cast fishing rod.

They won a SMART award, a Scottish entrepreneurship prize and are based in Burntisland, Fife.

Plan for Ecological Reserve Not So Sweet.

The government of Uganda has approved a ludicrous and damaging plan to clearcut more than 7000 acres of the the Mabira forest, which is also an ecological reserve. Why? To pave way for a sugar plantation, officials confirmed last Wednesday, March 21st.

As of March 24th, someone had stepped forward to offer land to use for the sugar plantation instead of Mabira. Mabira covers 29,964 hectares of tropical moist forest, is one of the largest forests in Uganda, is a very significant water catchment area for Lake Victoria, the second largest lake in the world, which has a giant impact on the world's longest river - the Nile.

Using Physics to Build Large Monuments

Presenting Wallace T. Wallington, retired carpenter and construction worker and his demonstrations of how the Egyptians, Picts, Britons and others may have moved extremely heavy rocks, stones, and blocks of such materials to erect and construct menhirs, obelisks, pyramids, Stonehenge, Easter Island, and similar sites.

And it doesn't require a huge work crew - just a bit of ingenuity.

There is a video here. and...

Poisoned Pet Food Gluten May Be In Other Foods

In the last show, we looked at a study by medical researchers at the University of Pennsylvania that found that meditation can help patients suffering from congestive heart failure. We also looked at an upcoming talk entitled 'Green revolution - Whose revolution? which is happening at Ottawa's Congress Centre on March 26th, starting at 7 pm and features African and Canadian plant biologists, farmers and members of NGO's from both countries and looks at who the Bill and Melinda Gates and Rockefeller Foundations investments in African agriculture will actually benefit.

We also looked at the Menu Foods mass poisoned pet food recall, at what foods were recalled, plus little on symptoms of kidney failure and the reason why kidney failure produces such symptoms and what people should do if pets showed these symptoms. At the time the show was written - Monday - the US's FDA was saying the most likely culprit was tainted wheat gluten. What it was contaminated with was still in question at the time of the broadcast.

Now investigators have figured out the gluten appears to have been contaminated with a type of rat poison that was somehow in the wheat gluten used in the pet food. The tainted gluten was from a new supplier.

For some reason government and Menu Foods are not releasing the name of the wheat gluten supplier. This is not a good thing. Why? Because gluten is used as a thickener in many foods - not just for pets but for human consumption. It is a major ingredient in meat analogue products such as vegetarian bologna slices, Tofurky, and the like and is used to bind ingredients together. It is also used in pretty much all commercially prepared bread such as Dempsey's, Weston's etc.

The Recall List

Menu foods makes a huge number of private label brands and has pulled all of the brands that were in the test.

All foods recalled were sold in pouch or canned form. A number of other companies that sell canned cat foods made by Menu Foods have also initiated voluntary recalls.

If your pet is showing signs of ill health, please call your veterinarian. Renal failure does not have to mean death. Prescription pet food is available and is the standard treatment for chronic renal (kidney) failure.

Here is the list (announced on the last show) of recalled pet food:

Proctor& Gamble which sells IAMS and Eukanuba is recalling the 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. of canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch "wet" cat and dog food products which were made by Menu Foods Inc. Emporia, Kansas plant
with the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197.

To read can product codes, look at the bottom of the can. The first four numbers of the second line of numbers are the date code, and the following four numbers indicate the plant code. For example, if the second line begins with four numbers from 6339 to 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, then the can should be recalled. For foil pouches, the code numbers are located at the lower left hand corner on the back of the pouch.

NestlĂ© Purina PetCare Company is voluntarily withdrawing its 5.3 ounce Mighty Dog® brand pouch products that were produced by Menu Foods, Inc. from December 3, 2006 through March 14, 2007.

The Mighty Dog pouch products and pouches in multi-pack cartons have code dates of 6337 through 7073, followed by the plant code 1798. This information should be checked on the bottom or back panel of the individual pouches. Specifically,
if the code following the "Use By" date begins with four numbers from 6337 to 7073 followed by the plant code 1798, then the pouch is included in this voluntary withdrawal. The list from Menu foods website is extensive. NB: These are canned and wet cat pet food. NOT DRY.

Some companies are providing purchasers of the tainted pet food with refunds. Contact the manufacturer for further details.

For full information please call menu recall information line at:

The Red Planet, Iced

This week and last week's shows looked at news from NASA, in particular, the search for life on Mars.

I will be posting links to the sites our astronomy reporter, Mark Young, dug up, showing NASA may know more about life on the planet than they are letting on. Here are 2 links he found that he wanted me to post about this: showing possible ice on Mars. and also this second link."
Here is something on the subject from the BBC news, on how Mars has enough underground ice to flood the planet.

Nanomaterials + Your DNA, etc.

(Ottawa) This week's show features a piece on the brewing 'Copyfight': the music industry vs. listeners and artists and how it may change how much you pay to hear music on your IPod or cell phone.

And research shows how one kind of tiny carbon molecules, nanoparticles known as buckminsterfullerine (a.k.a. 'buckyballs') can get stuck in your DNA and cause it to fall apart. Oh, but we wish we were kidding.

Plus, the UN is after developed nations to get on board the climate change protocol train. You think Kyoto's targets are high? Wait till you hear what the UN's climate change expert wants to set things at. Carbon credits and more.

All on this week's show, featuring music by Alberta band "Ground", track 10 from their 2003 album.

I don't know who the Carbon Credit Review thinks they are but they're ganking posts from all manner of media outlets and labelling them as "original posts by Carbon Credit Review" - >even this very post! as well as such luminaries as the Australian Broadcast Network, and God only knows what other mainstream media giants. This reporter for CKCU-FM is waitin' for da US or UK or Aussie lawsuit! They gotta rewrite that copy - I'm pretty sure it's actionable in the US anyway. They have their comments section disabled, too. Nasty!

BOARD ON AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

REQUEST FOR INPUT

to a new study on

Emerging Technologies in Agriculture to Benefit Farmers in Africa and South Asia

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded $955,000 to the National Research Council's Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources for a study to identify new scientific knowledge and promising technology with the potential to transform the production capabilities of farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Looking beyond today's proven technologies, the study will focus on identifying emerging innovations to identify the next generation of tools, including those that may be highly uncertain but have the potential to be powerful, and that draw on cutting-edge developments in a broad range of scientific fields.

In the study's first phase, experts from different scientific fields will explore the technological horizon in disciplines ranging from agronomy and genomics to information science, materials science, chemistry, engineering, and other fields, in search of innovations that can promote sustainable crop and animal production in these developing regions of the world. In a second phase, the study will identify steps needed to develop the most promising ideas into field-testable agricultural applications.

Several workshops will be held to gather information and identify synergies between scientific disciplines in and outside of agriculture. The Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources encourages the world's scientific and engineering communities to contribute ideas from the frontiers of their fields that may have beneficial applications for agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Ideas may be sent to banr@nas.edu, Attention: Michael Ma.
This message was delivered by the Division on Earth & Life Studies at the National Academies. Please direct general inquires to dels-webmaster@nas.edu.

Spider Silk, Return of a Locally Extinct Species...

The October 18th show was part 2 of the show before that and featured a study on tarantulas producing silk from their feet and not just their spinnarets. It is not known (yet) if other spiders do this; if it turns out that they do, then which came first - the spinnaret silk or the foot silk?- will have implications for the evolutionary biology of spiders.

Meanwhile in Britain, the Large Blue Butterfly which was extirpated in the UK has been successfully reintroduced, by putting habitats back to the way they used to be - able to support the Myrmica sabuletti, a special species of red ant whose nests play host to the butterfly's caterpillars. The caterpillars feed on the ant larvae and pupas. The large Blue can't survive without this other insect, which requires a certain sort of habitat.
