"Strawberry Daiquiri, Doc!"
Does soaking fruit in booze *really* make it healthier?
Whereas over on Digg, booze drinkers, swingers, a plethora of bachelors and bachelorettes and other wishful thinkers are already laying into the strawberry daiquiris, to celebrate the research news that adding berries to alcohol can boost the amount of phytochemicals available for your body to use, the BBC reports that other scientists (nutritionists and dieticians) say that the effect of the alcohol (for example on your liver!) may cancel out any health gains from the liberated antioxidants. Here's what alcohol does, in excess, to your liver! And there is more info here.
By the "drink your face off! it's healthy!" line of reasoning (read wishful thinking!) you could just as well make strawberry rum trifle and call it a health food ;-). I will admit I quite like that line of thought but it sure isn't rational! That's the path that leads thinking thatdoughnuts and beer will make you live longer! So *very* not. Not even if they are gluten-free! But then there is Matt's Super Genius Vodka Infusion, featuring not just strawberries but also pineapple and watermelon. And watermelon is oozing with lycopene.
